德进六 - Te Chapter 76

若民恒是不畏死 奈何以杀愳之也

若民恒是死 则而为者 吾将得而杀之 夫孰敢矣

若民恒是必畏死 则恒有司杀者

夫伐司杀者杀 是伐大匠斲也

夫伐大匠斲者 则希不伤亓手矣

如果民众一直不怕死亡，又怎么能够用杀伤来恐吓他们呢？ 如果（有一类行为使得）民众怎么着都是死路一条，那么（把这类行为、操作）作为规章制度确定下来，并且付诸执行的人，一经发现我就抓来处死，还有谁敢做这种逼死人（为非作歹）的事呢？ 如果民众始终惧怕死亡，那么始终需要设置有主管杀伤的人（机构）存在。如果（绕过掌管杀人的机构）自己去征讨本该由掌管杀伤的机构去执行杀伤的对象，就像自己去砍伐本该由高明的木匠才能处理（砍削）的木材一样。砍伐只有高明的木匠才能处理的木材，很少有不伤到自己手的。

• 愳，恐也；

• 斲，斫也。

If the people no longer fear death, how can they be intimidated by violence?

If there is a type of behavior that leads to certain death, then make it a rule and regulation and enforce it strictly, if anyone is found breaking it, they will be caught and put to death, who would dare to do such a thing?

If people are always afraid of death, then there must always be someone in charge of violence. If you go around killing people that should be dealt with by the authorities in charge of violence, it's like cutting wood that should only be handled by skilled carpenters. Cutting wood that only skilled carpenters should handle, rarely does it not hurt yourself.
