道廿二 - Tao Chapter 22

炊者不立 自视者不章 自见者不明 自伐者无功 自矜者不长

其在道曰 余食赘行 物或恶之

故有欲者弗居

真正做事情的时候不需要也不能顾及自我（的形象）。 自我的人臭美，其实旁人未必觉得他（她）穿着华贵漂亮；自我的人坚持自己的见解，其实未必真的能够看清事物；自我的人常常说自己能力多强，其实未必真有什么成就；自我的人常常夸大自己，其实未必真的能长久维持。 这样的人在前进的道路上表现出来的状态就象吃撑了的人背着很重的包袱前行。可能会被目标事物所厌恶（而不能成事），所以真正想做事的人不会那么自我。

When doing something, one should not and cannot take into account one's own image.

A self-centered person may not be seen as well-dressed or fashionable by others, may not be able to see things clearly, may not have real achievements despite claiming to be capable, and may not be able to maintain their boastful claims for long.

Such a person's actions may be met with aversion, and thus, someone who truly wants to accomplish something will not be self-centered.
