五色令人目明

驰骋畋猎 使人心发狂

难得之货 使人行方

五味使人之口爽

五音使人之耳聋

是以圣人之治也 为腹不为目 故去罷取此

绚丽的色彩，让人眼前一亮（以至眼花缭乱）；纵情追逐猎物，会让人精神亢奋（心浮气躁，以至狂乱难收）。稀有难得的财物，会让人走上歪路。 美味佳肴口感舒爽，但是过度的味觉刺激会导致味觉受损。美妙乐曲令人享受，但是沉迷于靡靡之音会令人蒙蔽，对正经事理听而不闻，显得蒙昧无知。 因此通达事理的人经营自己的方略是，注重赖以生存的根本，而不是追求单纯感官的刺激、声色浮华。所以他们可以摒弃那些让人偏离正常的物欲，从而获得对自身完全的管理。 方，旁出也。 爽本訓明。明之至而差生焉。 罷，有賢能而入罔。
