道十三 - Tao Chapter 13
宠辱若惊 贵大患若身
何谓宠辱若惊
宠之为下 得之若惊 失之若惊 是谓宠辱若惊
何谓贵大患若身
吾所以有大患者 为吾有身也 及吾无身 有何患
故
贵为身于为天下 若可以托天下矣
爱以身为天下 如可以寄天下矣
受到重视(恩宠)或贬斥都会导致惊乱,可能引起灾患,对这些灾患需要引起重视,就像重视自身性命一样。 重视或贬斥怎么会导致惊乱?被重视的那一方往往是处于较低的位置,受到重视会感觉惊喜,而失去重视又会无所适从、惊慌失措。这就是重视或贬斥都会引起惊乱的原因。 为什么要和重视自身性命一样重视可能的灾患?“我”为什么会有灾患,正是因为“身体”的存在。如果身体不存在,灾患就失去依附或者降临的目标了。 所以重视自己身体更甚于对天下的重视,这样的人是可以囊括天下;而奉献自己的身体一心为天下的,反而成为“天下”的附庸。

The person who is valued is often in a lower position, and being valued can lead to feelings of surprise, while losing that valued status can lead to feelings of uncertainty and panic. This is the reason why being valued or criticized can lead to confusion.
Why should potential disasters be taken as seriously as one's own life? The reason for potential disasters is because of the existence of the "body." If the body did not exist, disasters would lose their target to cling to or strike.
Therefore, valuing one's own body more than valuing the world is a way to encompass the world; while dedicating one's own body wholeheartedly to the world, it becomes a "world" vassal.
